Vidomi is an attempt to answer the question of what seeing is and what it is not. Do we realise the meaning of the sense of sight? By confronting the visually-impaired with the sighted, we are trying to develop alternative working techniques to overcome the physical limitations. We use the synergy of impulses – words, sounds, touch, movement – to create our own language for communication. We are learning to see with our whole bodies and to discover the world based on a different kind of seeing which does not have to be limited by a physical impairment or the ‘blindness’ of the mind, or by stereotypical judgments. This kind of work in theatre lets us go beyond the borders which the society puts in front of us in our everyday lives. Theatre becomes a medium in which differences between us become a creative tool. Visual impairment does not need to mean life in the dark. How do you see it?

The group is made up of young dancers who took part in CHOREA Theatre’s outreach and artistic projects such as Oratorium Dance Project (2011) and The Ugly (2013) and of pupils from Special Education and Care Centre No. 6, Łódź. The group has met regularly since 2014 during dance and theatre workshops. Vidomi is the outcome of one year of work under the guidance of Janusz Adam Biedrzycki and Magda Paszkiewicz. Two new scenes were added to the show in 2015.

Spotkanie z CHOREĄ - Olimpiada Teatralna we Wrocławiu

Meeting with CHOREA - Theatre Olympics Festival

Theatre Olympics Festival in Wroclaw

Meeting with CHOREA Theatre members "The Body Knows – the Body Sees. Theatre within the Hand’s Reach" on Theatre Olympics Festival in Wroclaw

date: 22.10.2016
time: 9:30 am
place: Barbara, 8c Świdnicka Street, Wroclaw

"The Body Knows – the Body Sees. Theatre within the Hand’s Reach"
Chaired by Agnieszka Piasecka and Jarek Rebeliński
Participants: Janusz Adam Biedrzycki and Magdalena Paszkiewicz (members of CHOREA Theatre) and Sophy Laly with Annabelle Mailliez (members of Compagnie de l’Oiseau-Mouche)

"Perhaps only in a world of the blind will things be what they truly are […]. People, too, no one will be there to see them." (José Saramago)
Let’s talk about the need and opportunity of theatre to surpass the stereotype which associates theatre with show – and thus, showing – and the actor and spectator with seeing. Let’s ask, explore, and perform. In what consists the sense of sight or the sense of not seeing? In what consists the work with the body, with touch, with the common feeling of theatre actors that do not see in the conventional way, or whose experience is related to intellectual disability? Which kind of theatre has an effect on the visually impaired? What theatre stimulates their development? What can the seeing spectators / fellow actors / co-creators learn from the blind actors? And what from the intellectually disabled actors who prepare a performance, thinking of the people with the sense of not-seeing?

System is like an inextricable labyrinth. When trying to find a man inside of it, one comes across a human being hunched under a protection layer of mechanical conducts, sprockets and facades that he takes on an everyday basis. Basic needs disappear being overloaded by the information that is coming from all directions. Our instincts have been trampled. Nowadays we are seeking balance between being mechanical and vivid, and sensitive. We are struggling with system, that has dragged us so hard that it changed the shape and boundaries of human being. How not to get mechanical? Answer /Not Found/

Project „Take Over: Seeing young audiences through young people’s eyes” is an international and educational project of CHOREA Theatre, directed to women and men aged 18-28. It has been carried out with Kolarac Foundation (Serbia), Bios-exploring urban culture (Greece), Teatro delle Limonia (Italy) from 2014 to 2017 in the partnership with British Council within the programme of the European Commission „Creative Europe“. The keynote of the project is gaining an audience. Young participators of the project will prepare an artistic event in the areas of dance, music and theatre in two years. It will be a reflection of desires, changes, and aspirations of contemporary young generation, connected with the broad notion of culture. The entire event will be invented, designed and produced by the young, and directed at their peers. Although Take Over, a theatre by the young, has a purpose of keeping current audience, most importantly, it's aimed at getting new, young receivers of CHOREA Theatre.

Project co-financed by the City of Lodz Office.

Directors note:

Nowadays the latest technologies and scientific discoveries have created a very uncomfortable and embarrassing situation in the area of the arts and so-called 'humanities', because they enter without permission into the field of questions and problematics reserved exclusively for the "spiritual" and philosophical sphere of human activity. The matters which, until now, were considered as the exclusive domain of philosophers, artists, theologians, ethicists and prophets, are now being penetrated into by physicists, computer scientists, neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists and neurobiologists.

With the help of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance tomography (MRT), and the latest generations of CT scanners, researchers and scientists are able to stimulate and define, in a very precise way, the areas of the brain which are responsible for the creativity of the human mind and soul. They can register, manipulate and play with human consciousness and memory. Recently, they even created an artificial brain, giving it a graceful name: "The Organoid".

On the other hand, we are losing all points of reference, in this fluid postmodern void in which we live. Surrounded by a vague, misty state in which all values are relative, with our hands full of the latest gadgets and wonders of technology, we are starting to feel a strong need of building an objective order and finding some constant, solid qualities.

In such a reality, the brain becomes a new oracle, a real hope, and the greatest fetish of the twenty-first century. We're not talking about mind, soul, consciousness or the “Self” - here the definitions are fluid, ambiguous and can be questioned easily. Objectively, the brain is just a one-and-a-half-kilo jelly-like object, which used to be the biggest mystery of mankind (not only from the perspective of evolution, but also that of functionality, creativity, unpredictability and insanity). Finally, we are able to explore this mystery. We can manipulate it, and convert it into a cult object. The brain is a creator of everything in the universe which is not a pure product of nature. (Besides, the brain as a product of nature, is already manipulating nature!) We believe that by deciphering the brain's access codes we can discover absolute truth - unquestionable, measurable, easy to verify, and easy to experiment on.

In our performance, we are asking about the position of the human factor in this situation. Are we able to reduce all the emotions, inter-human relations, and various states of mind and soul into neuronal schemes of electrochemical impulses?

A group of researchers is now finalizing the last stage of a complex project, in which they are exposing their bodies and minds to extreme experimentation. In this final stage of exploration, they are trying to define their own personal perspectives and points of reference, showing the opposition (and helplessness) of the human aspect set against the arrogant ruthlessness of science and bio-techno-ideologies.
